Touch technology is one of the most misunderstood parts of a slot machine screen specification. The two technologies used on gaming displays behave differently in the casino environment — here is how to choose.
PCAP (projected capacitive)
- How it works: a capacitive sensor grid behind the glass detects finger contact.
- Strengths: precise, supports multi-touch (our screens are 10-point), works through strengthened glass, no bezel opening required, feels similar to a smartphone.
- Considerations: requires a conductive touch (bare finger or capacitive stylus); gloves and wet hands reduce sensitivity.
- Typical use: modern slot cabinets, bonus selection, player menus, multi-touch game mechanics.
Infrared (IR) touch
- How it works: a grid of infrared emitters and receivers around the screen edge detects any object that breaks the beams.
- Strengths: works with gloves, styluses or any object; historically lower cost; tolerant of surface contamination.
- Considerations: the bezel must house the IR array; number of simultaneous touch points is often lower; dust on the bezel can affect performance.
- Typical use: kiosks, ticketing, industrial and some legacy cabinets.

Specification checklist for touch
- Number of simultaneous touch points your game content uses
- Interface: USB (most common) or RS232 — confirm what your platform expects
- Glass type and anti-glare treatment (touching a glossy screen shows fingerprints)
- Operating environment: gloves? cleaning chemicals? direct sunlight?
- Calibration and driver requirements of your game software
